“It is fatal to be a man or woman pure and simple; one must be woman-manly or man-womanly. ... Some marriage of opposites has to be consummated.” - Virginia Woolf
Today more than ever, gender fluidity and expression is reaching the forefront of mainstream discourse. How does rhetoric affect the opinions and conversations we have about gender? In what way does communication serve as a form of self-expression, and self-expression a form of communication?
Mattioli Production's upcoming documentary "Words" will explore how people navigate gender and identity in the open and evolving landscape of New York City. Using some if NYC's most fluid scenes as a backdrop, host Kevin Bartini will investigate how masculinity, femininity, and everything in between are contextualized in a range of environments, from the theatre world to early childhood education.
Featuring exclusive interviews from a variety of artists, activists, icons, and innovators, "Words" promises to be a poignant and powerful tribute to the language we use to shape our identities.

Melissa Carter is disenchanted with New York City. Years of bad auditions, failed relationships and soul-crushing day jobs have finally broken her spirit. In an attempt to rediscover her purpose, she returns to her hometown and takes a role in a local theater’s newest endeavor, a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”. When she comes face to face with her former high school flame, a pair of diva leading ladies, an overbearing mother, and worst of all, a prickly, no nonsense stage manager, the question emerges: Will Melissa’s summer comedy become a melodrama?
